Although we never like to think of potential dangers our children could face, Tiny Hearts is an invaluable course for all parents. Topics covered include Infant CPR, choking, drowning, infant asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis, burns, temperatures and seizures, pain relief, poisoning, SIDs and safe sleeping.

No one recognises the need for these skills more so than co-founder Rachael Waia, who saved the life of a nine-year-old child with the use of CPR after a drowning incident.

Tiny Hearts has trained over 3,000 parents including celebrity parents such as Megan Gale, Hamish and Zoe Blake and Kate Richie. And while hands-on techniques such as learning CPR on manikin babies and children may be confronting, they are invaluable skills to have. No one recognises the need for these skills more so than co-founder Rachael Waia, who saved the life of a nine-year-old child with the use of CPR after a drowning incident. Rachel and her sister Nikki Jurcutz are both founders of Priority CPR and the Tiny Hearts First Aid Kit. Both have backgrounds in educating and life-saving techniques.

At the Sunday morning Tiny Hearts Paediatric First Aid Course that I attended, the trainer Jackie was both engaging and informative, and with a background as a paediatric nurse, was both confident in her demonstration and delivery while being able to give practical examples from her day-to-day experience. There are dangers as a parent you never like to think of, but you can ensure your home is as safe as you can possibly make it. There was time to ask questions at the end and Jackie was both knowledgeable and neutral in responding – as we all know there can be some conflicting advice on treating children out there.

Courses are 3.5 hours long and conducted in the evenings and on weekends. I walked away from the course as a parent of a four-month-old girl feeling more confident not to panic if ever a situation arose.

Although now being armed with potential life-saving skills and information, here’s hoping I never have to practice them in real life!
