The GAB interviews Mark Berry, Owner of The Bower.
What’s the story behind The Bower?
Both [Sue and my] recent family ancestry had a strong rural background, so it was perhaps inevitable that we would gravitate back to our own piece of land. From the early teenage years, I’d hoped to get “back onto the land” but the obstacles seemed at times to be insurmountable.

Despite opening up our beef and sheep grazing property northwest of Goulburn, to paying guests in one of the early FarmStay businesses in NSW, our family was unable to recover from the 1966 bushfire and support itself through th six- year drought that followed soon after.

However, those years included many happy memories and the business of “farming tourists” always held some attractions to me.

After running our own real estate business in the Southern Highlands [two hours South of Sydney] and another stint in the computer industry for me, we decided that it was time for the “seachange” or “treechange”

Once we found our land we were immediately captivated. We needed to call this region home and so began the dream of The Bower at Broulee, and our offering of unique South Coast holiday packages.

The property is between the beautiful waterways of Batemans Bay and the Moruya River and handy to the popular surfing beaches of Broulee. The South Coast district is characterised by extensive natural forests, with pockets of unspoilt rainforest, rugged mountain backdrops and a wide range of waterways. In fact, many of the people who have moved to the South Coast in recent times are very protective and don’t like to spread the word too much about its advantages.

Therefore, I have felt for some time that the need exists for an informative website to describe the hidden gems of the South Coast of NSW. As I mentioned above, many of the locals feel that we should keep these secrets to ourselves, lest too many people find out, and want to visit, or even worse still – move here!

What do you offer that is unique / different from other businesses?

Absolute Privacy – The distance and the native forest between each Bower is unique for luxury accommodation in the region.

What are the rates and discounts?

Due to the costs of servicing the highest standards of cleanliness etc. that we offer, the single-night rates are relatively expensive. However, The Bower offers great rates for multi-night stays, especially through the shoulder season and outside of school and public holiday times when the demand is not so intense. Check the Snuggle Season Specials through winter.

What has been the biggest challenge of having The Bower?

Getting approvals from all the various levels of government in the first place. After the popularity of the product was confirmed by lots of repeat guests and referrals, the next challenge was to keep up with the demand. Then, gaining approval [and finance] to expand our capacity was/is the next challenge. Hence the introduction of the new Bambino product, described below.

What can be expected in the coming months?

The ‘Bambino at the Bower’ is a new glamping experience for the NSW South Coast. For those who are pressed for time, our incredibly funky (not to mention iconic!) Airstream trailer has arrived. We’ve nicknamed it ‘The Bambino’ and have placed it in a most beautiful location overlooking our new pond and the escarpment. It has an internal loo and shower, extra-long double bed and the quality fit-out that Airstream is renowned for. The Bambino is located in the forest behind Broulee which is just South of Batemans Bay on the South Coast of New South Wales.

We also cater weddings and other celebrations at Banquets at The Bower.
