HOTEL REVIEW: THIS IS HOW TO DO A STOPOVER IN BANGKOK

The W Factor: like having the X factor but infinitely more cool

pool

People often have a night or two stopover in Bangkok on the way to some fabulous island destination in Thailand. And every time, there’s that inevitable frenzied Google search for where to stay. But rather than just choosing any old place to rest your head, how about selecting a hotel that’s an event in itself? A place where the hotel will almost steal the show from the city itself. That is what the W Bangkok is, i.e. if you’re there for two days, you probably won’t want to leave the hotel the whole time – no joke.

Feel like a bit of a rock star, if only for a night or two.

A contemporary, design-led lifestyle brand, the W is anything but boring. It’s modern, it’s stylish, and everywhere you look (and listen) there’s fashion, music and entertainment. The W Bangkok is undeniably glam and cool. They really do make you feel like a bit of a rock star, if only for a night or two.

The Rooms

Style is a given in at the W. But the rooms go a little further – it’s all about top-of-the-range mod cons and a personalised service. Let’s set the scene. Firstly there’s the W’s famous Whatever/Whenever service, which anybody who’s stayed at a W before will know means you can call up reception whenever you want and ask for essentially anything you want (unless it’s illegal, of course).

When you walk into your room at the W Bangkok the music’s pumping, there are oversized glittery boxing gloves on the bed and the mini bar is very proudly displayed. On this occasion, there was even a make-your-own-mojito kit set up in the mini-living room complete with white leather corner couches – how can you go wrong!

The Pool

The W Bangkok has a 24-hour rooftop pool. And it’s worth noting that this pool is known as one of the hottest rooftop pools in the city. There’s a bar that operates until 10:00 pm serving cocktails, beers, wines and more. Choose from deck chair seating around the front and side of the pool, or venture up the ramp at the back to make use of the more private, four-poster day beds.

The Spa

It goes without saying that if you’re jetting off to Samui or Phuket after a couple of days in Bangkok, you’re in Thailand for a bit of R&R, so if you have time, a visit to the spa is a must. AWAY Spa is your ultimate chill out zone – you can even choose what colour scheme you want in your treatment room. There’s also a hammam, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Lie down on the oversized, super-soft treatment beds and de-stress with a massage, facial, body scrub or body wrap before hopping on the plane to your final destination.

The Restaurant

An all-day dining venue, The Kitchen Table is all about quality food with a touch of innovation – you are at the W, after all. The buffet brekkie offers up a full array of the classics – eggs made to order, sausages, bacon and the lot, as well as a large selection of Asian bites and a baked goods section. The health conscious will be impressed with the individual glass jars of Greek yoghurt, Bircher muesli, carrot juice and the like. At dinner time the restaurant transforms into a slick eatery where it’s all about fresh seafood, succulent steaks and modern twists on Asian classics.
