THE SHAW DAVEY SLUM – MELBOURNE

A great bar and restaurant with an even better story

In 1958, two housing commissioners, Shaw and Davey, declared large areas of housing in Carlton as slums and attempted to bring them down. So began the fight to preserve Carlton’s heritage.

The Shaw Davey Slum in Carlton represents this era of Australian history and so has combined a little bit of the 1960s with contemporary Australian. From the outside you could mistake this venue for your typical hotel pub, but step inside and you will immerse yourself in the luxury and excitement of this versatile restaurant and bar.

The large space comprises two levels and can hold more than 500 patrons. The main dining area on the bottom level is decked out with an array of themes including rustic brick wall paper, floral patterns as well as a retro-style bar.

Upstairs feels like another venue altogether – one of ultimate luxury. A stunning crystal chandelier hangs above the staircase before you are greeted by a beautiful bar laced with 36 gold-plated cricket-wicket beer taps. The upstairs space is also draped in 1960s-themed décor, and the large dance floor and retractable rooftop make this space a hot spot to be any night of the week.

Aside from its resplendent décor, The Shaw Davey Slum also has an adventurous and extensive food and drinks menu. It’s a treat to find a restaurant that does affordable honest food really well and that’s what these guys do. Using 100% local produce, you know you are getting the freshest ingredients when your food hits the table.

With so many options it can be hard to decide what you’re craving so here are a few selections you shouldn’t miss out on. The popcorn chicken is the perfect starter to the evening or a great dish to sample with friends. The crispy pork belly is another great choice and portion sizes for a starter are generous. The housemade apple and cranberry compote is extraordinary.

For the main affair it’s hard to go past one of the burgers especially when they look like these do. The Beef & Honey Works Burger comes complete with a beef patty, bacon, a fried egg, fresh pineapple, tasty cheese, beetroot chutney, tomatoes, lettuce and bbq sauce with special Vegemite mayo. For the number of ingredients in one burger, it’s surprising how well they work together and the Vegemite mayonnaise is a unique twist.

For the ultimate ending to your evening, you’ll need to try the cheesecake with flavours changing every week. For only $5 it would be rude not to.

Of course you wouldn’t want to enjoy such wonderful food without it being accompanied by a few of your favourite cocktails, and the experienced bar staff will be able to whip you up something just the way you like it. The venue also has a fully functional bottle shop, which means you can take your favourite drink home with you.

With daily deals, never-ending drink specials and a themed dress-up every month, The Shaw Davey Slum really is your one-stop shop for great food, drinks and entertainment.
