Breathe easy in Bondi
Since the 1800s, Eastern Europeans have used underground salt caves to help treat illnesses. For decades, the same has been offered to elite athletes and Melbourne Cup-winning horses (it helps increase lung capacity, thereby improving stamina). So you’d be forgiven for wondering why it’s taken so long for it to be made accessible to – and affordable for – everyday Australians. Does it have a major side effect that is worse than those of pharmaceutical treatments? Certainly not! (Unless you’re allergic to salt…)
People come in here for bronchitis, sinusitis, cystic fibrosis, allergies, ear infections, psoriasis, eczema, depression, stress, snoring and even sleep apnoea – and it’s easy to see why.
A mind full of queries and skepticism was soon put at ease once manager Tanya (a lovely Russian therapist) went through the process at Bondi Junction’s salt-therapy clinic Saltrooms Australia.
She explained that the treatment only gained mainstream credibility about five years ago. People come in here for bronchitis, sinusitis (one woman still comes even after sinus surgery to assist in her recovery), cystic fibrosis, allergies, ear infections, psoriasis, eczema, depression, stress, snoring and even sleep apnoea – and it’s easy to see why.
Once you’re given disposable ‘socks’ to cover your shoes (the large rock salt on the floor is quite hard to walk on, so don’t go in barefoot if you can help it), you’re led into a quiet room. It’s best to leave any technological items (phones, tablets) inside your designated locker as the room is filled with fine salt particles, which you’ll be able to taste if you breathe in through your mouth.
Each space is complete with a super-comfy recliner, a tissue box (for when the insides of your nose start to loosen) and the softest blanket, just in case you get cold. With all of these conveniences, it’s easy to fall asleep – even if you’ve brought in reading material to keep you occupied for the 45 minutes.
But if the thought of being left to your own devices for so long doesn’t appeal, Saltrooms Australia also offers meditation and yoga classes. Fixing the body and the mind? Yes please!
