This intimate, family run massage shop is an oasis of calm in St Kilda
Conveniently located on Barkly Street, this Thai massage shop is a little sanctuary – an escape from manic Melbourne. It’s quiet inside, the air is filled with the scents of relaxing essential oils, and the warm, tropical décor is instantly calming. And from the moment you walk in and are greeted with a smile by friendly owner Ron, you know you’ve chosen the right place to come to relax and unwind.
The intimate vibe in Full Moon is a big part of its appeal. It’s family owned, and husband and wife owner team Ron and Karn are not only the brains behind the operation, but also integral in its day-to-day running – Ron takes care of front of house while Karn offers her expert massage skills alongside a small team of massage therapists.
All of the massage therapists at Full Moon have been fully trained at the reputable Wat Pho Thai Traditional Massage School, and their certificates are proudly displayed on the walls.
As you begin your massage, your massage therapist asks first if you have any aching areas that you’d like her to work on, and then if you have any injuries that you’d prefer she avoid.
A traditional Thai massage involves the massage therapist finding areas that are tight and then applying pressure for a number of seconds until the tightness begins to release. It’s all about using gentle pressure along the energy lines. You can choose whether or not you’d like to have the Thai-style stretching at the end of the session, which loosens up joints and improves mobility.
Another option is to have an aroma oil massage, which incorporates essential oils and a gentle massage technique that’s designed specifically to relax both your body and mind.
For those who want a bit of both the Thai and aroma oil techniques, there’s the combination massage, which synthesises the two massage types.
If you’re after a multi-therapy Thai massage, there’s the steamy herbal compress massage (called a lok prakob massage in Thai), which incorporates warm, steamed herbal balls. The steam encourages the healing herbs to absorb into the skin, which helps to relieve energy blockages and has an anti-inflammatory effect. The steamy herbal compress treatment is combined with Thai massage for maximum result. This treatment is designed to increase flexibility and range of motion in the muscles and joints.
You can also tailor your treatment to your time constraints: there are 30-minute, 1-hour and 90-minute options available. If you just want to pop in for a quick half-hour head and shoulder massage after work, then you can.
All of the treatments at Full Moon are designed to relax, reduce stress, improve circulation, increase energy, increase flexibility and centre your mind. And when combined with the exceptional service and intimate, relaxing atmosphere in this little massage shop, you’ll find your treatment does just that – and more.
