Drop it like it’s hot!
There’s a new contender for the title of “the most fun you’ll have with your clothes on”.
Walking up the stairs and through the graffiti-filled corridor to Dance Central is a life-changing feeling. Within an hour, you could be left with the skills of the women in Usher’s video clips – and a booty that could rival JLo’s.
“Be passionate, because there’s only one thing that’s certain in life,” he says, “and that’s the present.”
Today’s dancehall teacher is Winston Jean Charles from London’s famous Pineapple Dance Studios. He’s worked with the likes of Whitney Houston, Jermaine Jackson, the Spice Girls and even Cher! About 10 minutes in, it’s clear that for Winston dance is not just a way to move – it’s a way to live. Midway through, he explains that dancehall is all about feeling, and encourages the class to dance with passion. “Be passionate, because there’s only one thing that’s certain in life,” he says, “and that’s the present.” The room was filled with inspiration – a couple of people even got teary-eyed. And you can tell it had an effect by the way everybody busted a move afterwards.
Along the way, you will engage every muscle in your body as you “give dem a run” (run on the spot, using strong arm movements) and “white glide” (step forward with one leg and pull the other behind it), among so many others. The most important thing to do is feel the beat – if that means mixing up the moves, so be it! By the time you’ve perfected the whole routine, you’ll be able to see and feel the story that the moves are telling – one that’s bringing opponents closer but pushing them away at the same time, leaving you as top dog in your ’hood.
This incidental workout will have you sweating like never before, so wear light clothes and pack a bottle of water and you’ll be sweet. This goes for all the classes on offer. If dancehall isn’t your thing, try Bollywood, hip-hop, salsa, tango, club RnB, ballet or burlesque.
Whatever you choose, at the end of the day you will have gained major street cred – now it’s just a matter of remembering all the moves.
