Explore secret hideaways and the picturesque Moore River on horseback not far from Perth.

A ‘trail ride’ is horse riding in the great outdoors. No tracks, no tricks. Just you, your horse, your companions and your guide.

Imagine the lazy afternoon sun over an open vista with endless hills, bush, canyons and rivers to explore. Breathe in the earthy smells and contemplate your humanity in the swirling dust stirred up by those great majestic beasts, scattering golden light in a scene worthy of Brokeback Mountain. That’s the sort experience you’ll have when you try out 1300 Trail Rides, based at Neergabby just over an hour north of Perth CBD.

The secret to the success of 1300 Trail Rides is “all about the horses” according to owner and lead guide Denise. All her brood – and at last count there were 47 of them – are healthy, happy, have plenty of space, and as a result, are easy to ride, reliable and have a great temperament. Of course, Denise is being modest. What she omits to mention is that her family have painstakingly built the company from scratch over the past three years, and commandeered a lot of land in order to create this equine paradise, which backs onto further acres of state land available for your horse riding pleasure.

And what’s more, the company rescued many of the horses and rehabilitated them into their new homes and lives. The fabulous family that runs this enterprise has the friendly, easy temperament and solid work ethic that the horses have adopted.

The other advantage of this experience is that you need no experience at all. True to the company motto, it’s horse riding for everyone. A couple of quick instructions and you’re off in a small company of fellow adventurers exploring and trotting through the bush, crossing rivers and travelling along dry river beds. The horses know the score – you need just relax and enjoy the feeling of freedom and kinship with your amazing steed – perhaps accompanied by the farm dog Wally!

For those with some experience, there are advanced trails to explore, ranging from 1.5 hours to full day adventures. You can include a picnic or sausage sizzle, and even try a romantic couples ride into the glorious setting sun. A further menagerie of local animals is on hand to tempt the kids with pony rides, emus, kangaroos and other wildlife scattered about the property.

So much to explore and quite light on the wallet too, 1300 Trail Rides might just get you hooked on the great outdoors for good. If you do become an enthusiast, they can even find you your own horse before too long. It might just be the start of a beautiful friendship and some epic adventures in the amazing Australian outback with you in the lead role of The Man from Snowy River. Banjo Patterson eat your heart out!
